For Working Alternatives, curators Mackenzie Schneider, Terri C Smith, and Jess Wilcox explore three threads of alternative art platforms and production: conviviality and food as components in alternative art space programming and mission (Wilcox); artists using media such as radio, television, and newspapers as alternative venues for presenting work (Schneider); and artist collectives presented in a living archive with weekly changing exhibitions using archive materials (Smith). In addition to historical examples, the exhibition also includes original artworks by contemporary artists that reflect and expand on the showʼs themes. Working Alternatives’ artists include: Paul Branca, Jaime Davidovich, ESP TV, Group Material, Ann Hirsch, Alison Knowles, Tom Marioni, Anna Ostoya, Legacy Russell, Chris Sollars and Jerome Waag. Franklin Street Works is also excited to collaborate on several off-site artworks, including the live radio broadcast of an Ann Hirsch performance on WPKN, Bridgeport, and collages by Anna Ostoya in the Stamford Advocate via four, monthly ads during the show’s run.

“Franklin Street Works’ mission as a not-for-profit art organization is inspired, in part, by this rich history of alternative art spaces in New York and beyond, making Working Alternatives an informed expression of our influences and programming,” says Creative Director, Terri C Smith, “Considering our exhibitions often involve a level of collaboration, that our space has a café designed to be a convivial gathering place, and our affinity for new media, the sub-themes of the exhibition reflect our spirit and history in a nuanced manner, making this a fitting one-year anniversary exhibition for Stamford’s newest not-for-profit contemporary art space.”

Franklin Street Works is located in downtown Stamford on the same street as Uconn and near the Target. Directions.

Last year DesignerGrill was a sponsor for A Better World by Design, a three-day internationally acclaimed conference held annually at Brown & RISD campuses in Providence, RI that connects students, professionals, and individuals from a variety of disciplines in order to build a global community of socially conscious and passionate innovators.

In 2010, we provided the custom attendee and speaker notebooks. We were also participants in the Expo, a marketplace for eco-friendly (for lack of a better term) products and services with a emphasis on social good. And, Karl and I were both chosen out of over 60 entrants to be two of a handful of featured artists in the 1st Annual Art Exhibition at the Saturday night Gala that was held at the Steel Yard. We also launched the promotion for our first PUSH Design Camp on Block Island — which was included in the attendee swag bags.

In 2011, we’ll be sponsoring the conference under our fiZz and DesignerJournals™ brands —providing custom notebooks for the folks at A Better World by Design to sell, as well as custom journals for conference speakers. We’ll also be launching the promotion of our 2nd PUSH Design Camp on Block Island, scheduled for July 2011. And, you can find us at the Expo with eco-friendly DesignerJournals™ and other recycled products, including a special line of Weather sKwirl™ upcycled acrylic accessories.

A late September weekend in NYC — Reboot Retool Refuel brings a cross section of knowledgeable professionals speaking on topics every designer, illustrator and creative needs to capture to stay competitive. The Graphics Artist Guild is hosting this event at Pratt on 144 West 14 Street, Between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Kicking off Saturday morning, I will be speaking on a valuable topic — Fast Forward — continuing with our mission — creating best practices to Get Noticed. Visual communications have been evolving at a breakneck speed. How you show and what you show it on is a vital piece of your presentation. Staying up and ready to communicate with your audience is as critical as what you are representing in your work.

The Speakers — Daniel Palevin, Ilise Benun/Marketing Mentor, Gerard Huerta, Karl Heine, Margaret Cusack, Tom White, Christopher Irving and Tim Goldman. Check out the entire schedule to take in the whole weekend or a small piece. Register early — highly recommended to enjoy the whole weekend of inspiration with your peers. Thanks again to Mark Bennett/Graphic Artist Guild President for creating this venue for the entire creative community.
